dsc00782.JPGOne of the very common gujju dishes for everyday cooking is sev tamata nu shaak (sev and tomato curry). Quite a strange combination right!!!!! Now the main funda behind this wierd combination is that tomato being such a juicy vegetable fruit, it oozes out lot of water when cooked which makes the curry very watery!!!!!!!!!! And when you dip your chapati into it and put it into your mouth the juice from the curry runs all the way down your fore arm!!!!!!! And then you go licking it all the way!!!uuuuuuuugggggggghhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!! And hence the addition of sev into it which absorbs the watery part and makes the curry thick and rich!! 🙂

Coming from a gujju family this one was a sure favoutire of all……. except me!!!! I never enjoyed this wierd combination of sev and tomato together and hence my mum would use different kind of spices and make the gravy thick!!!! Can spices make the gravy thick????? Yes they can!! 🙂 Addition of dhania jeera powder and a teaspoon of besan/gram flour will give a nice thick texture to any watery gravy. Let see how…….

Back to Basics…..

Being far away from home it always makes you crave for those things which your mum would always make…… be it those traditional recipes or some basic masalas or any of those grandma secret’s.  

This always happens with me……. I might decide to make something, try to recollect what all things would go into it and then gather them all and begin with it….. half way through it I would realize that either something is wrong or I am missing one of the ingredients or should I do this first or that?????? And then, with dirty hands pick up the phone dial 0091 12345………. hold the phone between your head and your shoulder standing in the kitchen and narating what all you have done till now to your mum sitting a few thousand miles away and then…….. now what to do???? How much of this goes into it???? I dont have this, what should I do now? and a whole list of things…………. The phone companies have surely been benefitted with people moving across oceans and more so when food enthusiasts like me decide to make something just like my ma did and then get stuck in the middle, call up and, “now what???”  PHEW!!!! God alone know how many $$$ I would have spent jotting down recipes on phone!!!!!!!!!!

And so this time when I went back I captured it all on my cam and decided to put it up on the blog so that I have it with me LIVE forever!!!!! 🙂  

For those of you who tried to guess the two mountains……… The first one is not a flour, its CHAAT MASALA. I don’t doubt your culinary skills one bit 🙂 …… the pic was not too good to reveal the actual thing. Most of you got the second one right as some masala and Swapna, Jyotsna and Trupti guessed it correctly as GARAM MASALA. 🙂

 I would usually get a full years supply of these two masalas with me. But then the generous me would keep distributing to friends and colleagues around nicely advertising my ma’s masalas (she can actually start selling them 😉 )and then half way through the year realize that the stock is over. 😦 So then the wait begins ……. either someone coming to Singapore or when can I go back!!!!! And then finally I would give up hope and try to make them myself. Then starts a whole lot of phone calls and…… you know it right!!!! 🙂

So now I got no excuses for spending $$$ on these………..

And so I am back!!!!!!!!! After a month looooooooooooong trip back home. 🙂 Hope you all missed me!!!!! 🙂

I sure did enjoy my trip……. what with meeting family and friends……. eating the road side foods……. shopping till I would literally drop!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My humble apologies for this delay in posting the round up. But what with fast paced life in India I didn’t realize where my time was going!!!

Life is certainly fast paced here!!!! I feel I am living a so much more relaxed life back in Singapore!! ) 1 day in India is equivalent to 3 days there!!!!

Anyways, lets keep this for some other post. I have made you all wait enough so without much ado let get on with the round up!!!!! Hello everyone!!!!!! It’s time to partol again!!!!!! ) So are we ready!!!???? I know, I know the round up for feb is not out as yet. ( So why am I announcing for March???? With nearly 40 entries I am having a tough time juggling between compiling all of them and shopping and meeting everyone around and most of all visiting all the road side stalls for the most amazing street food!!!!! D  So just hang in there for a few more days till I am done with compiling them all together and till then lets get on with the theme for March!!!!!

You guys know what to do right??? BROWSE….. COOK ….. and take PICS!!!!! Its that simple. )

For the simple rules:

1. Based on the theme of the month, you have to cook something from the fellow bloggers posted recipes.

2. Post a pic of the final recipe on your blog linking it to the blogger (whose recipe you made) and to this event. Whether to make it a post or no, is entirely your choice. You can just put a final pic or put step by step pics or if you have made any variations you might want to highlight that or post the whole recipe. Its entirely upto you. But one final pic and a link to the blogger and this event is a must.

3. Email me your
name,
the pic,
permalink of your recipe/pic only and
a permalink of the blogger from whom you made this dish

with ‘MBP (current month) 2007?as the subject line.

4. Theme of the month will be announced during the first week of the month. You have to email me your post by the 20th of the month and the final round up will be done in the last ten days.

5. There is no limit to the number of entries that you might want to contribute. If you don’t have a blog, you can email me the post and I will do it for you. )

The theme for this month is “Lets Roll !!!!!!!” Don’t worry, its nothing to do with rock and roll ;) or any of the rolling exercises ;) . You have to make something which involves rolling. So any form of chapati or paratha or any thing else which you got to roll and make. ) Sounds simple??!!!! )

So get your rolling pins out and start partolling!!!!! )
